“Keep it up” Andrea !

L’expérience d’Andrea

Ai Andrea Brazeau-nguvunga. Hello, my name is Andrea Brazeau and I am 21 years old. I am an Inuk who was born and raised in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Quebec – a remote Inuit community in the Northernmost part of Quebec. As a result of growing up in a small community surrounded by mountains, trees, and wildlife, I have a strong connection with nature. My parents also made sure to take my siblings and I out hunting and camping when we were growing up.

I had to move away from Kangiqsualujjuaq in 2014 to pursue post-secondary education — the highest level of education in Kangiqsualujjuaq is high school. My post-secondary journey started at John Abbott College in the Fall of 2014. I had visited the south prior to moving to the Montreal, but actually living in the city came as a cultural shock to me. In addition to adapting to the academic demands of my new school, I was struggling to adapt to the fast paced lifestyle of the city.

Although I was going to the gym, I started living an unhealthy lifestyle. I was not training consistently and my eating habits were a mess. I gained weight and felt like crap, both physically and mentally. I decided to change for the better. After a friend told me she started working with Jo, I decided to give it a try. This was a major turning point in my short 21 years of life.

I first met Jo a little over 2 years ago, I did not have a specific goal in mind. All I knew was that I wanted to change my life habits. The beginning of my journey was difficult — it was hard balancing my social life with the goal of wanting to better myself. The nutrition part of my journey was the hardest. I even stopped my nutrition plan at one point, the process felt like chore. I was not 100% committed yet.

However, I decided to get back on track, and Jo supported me throughout the whole process. I’m so thankful for Jo’s never ending support. My outlook on life has really changed thanks to him. I now look at myself and my body completely different from before — I genuinely care about myself and enjoy taking care of my body. Training and nutrition are now part of my lifestyle, an ongoing process, and not a destination. I am able to accept everything that comes with along my journey. I have fallen in love with the thought of bettering myself and taking care of my body and I thank Jo for this. He was there, not telling me what to do, but guiding me, with absolutely no pressure. He was understanding and helped me better understand myself. I feel like we are a team now. This is not to say that I am perfect, that I eat healthy all the time, but i have improved and I am proud of that.

Where am I now? I am studying at McGill University to be a teacher. My goal is to teach the kids back home — only 3 more years! As for my fitness journey, I continue to love taking care of myself physically, and realized that training is a major factor that helps me cope with the stresses of being away from home. As Clara Hughes says, “movement is medicine”. Movement is my medicine and I want to thank Jo for helping me find that.
